How to Get Red Stains out of Carpet

Red Kool-Aid, Gatorade, strawberry pop, fruit punch, raspberry crystal light and other red dye stains are a pain to remove from your carpet, but definitely not impossible.  Here is a great trick that works wonders (even if the stain has been there awhile).

1.  If the stain is fresh, soak up all the liquid you can.

2.  Soak your stain with a mixture of half ammonia and half water. Or you can use one part dishwashing detergent or laundry detergent to 10 parts water.  I have also heard Windex (mixed with water) works. Just make sure whatever you use; it is clear or close to it.  If you use something with too much dye in it, the color can come onto your carpet.

3.  Get a white towel and drench it in water.  The towel must be white.  If the towel is a different color, the color could bleed onto your carpet and you could end up with a bigger mess!

4.  Iron the towel, steaming the stain right up onto your white towel.  You can hold the iron in one spot for about 30 seconds on high (depending on you iron and thickness of your towel).  Be very careful not to burn your carpet!  Also be very careful of the fumes ammonia can produce.  It is not fun to breathe in.  As the water is steamed out of your towel and carpet, add more.

5.  Repeat until your stain is gone.  Depending on your stain and cleaner it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour.

Good Luck!
