Bathroom Cleaning Tips
The bathroom would have to be my least favorite place to clean, but somebody has to do it. I don’t see a magic Genie ready to do it for me (or anyone else for that matter). Here are some simple homemade cleaners and tips to getting your bathroom sparkling clean.
Cleaning Bath Tubs and Showers
When cleaning your showers and bath tubs use a basic mixture of one part vinegar to one part water. Vinegar does a great job at removing most bacteria and doesn’t leave behind a soapy film. If your tub or shower needs a little extra attention, add some washing soda or borax to your cleaner.
Cleaning your Shower Heads
At least once a year clean your shower head to remove the build up from mineral deposits and soap scum. Screw off your shower head and soak it in hot vinegar for a couple hours. If you are having a hard time getting your shower head off, fill a zip lock bag half way full of vinegar and stick your shower head in the bag, securing the bag with a rubber band.
If your build up doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, stick you shower head in a pot of vinegar for 20 minutes simmering it on low. Just be careful not to melt your shower head, that would not be good. Another option is to sprinkle your shower head with baking soda and stick it in a bowl or sink with hot vinegar. The chemical reaction (fizzing) should help loosen the build up. Just make sure bowl is big enough to hold the fizz.
Drain Cleaner
Pour a half cup of baking soda down your drain, followed by 2 cups of hot vinegar. Allow it to set for 10 to 15 minutes and then flush it with a large pot of boiling (or hot) water. If this is not working use a gel drain cleaner (Drano works well). The gel drain cleaners work better on clogs than the liquid variety.
Cleaning Toilets
Sprinkle the inside of your toilet with some baking soda (Borax for dirtier toilets) and then spray with vinegar. Allow the vinegar to set for a few minutes and then scrub clean. Vinegar does a great job at killing bacteria and it is not hard on your toilets (like some toilet cleaners). Use a mixture of vinegar and water to finish cleaning the outside of your toilet.
If you are having a hard time removing toilet stains, empty your toilet bowl by pouring a bucket of water in the toilet. This will make your toilet drain out most of the water. Then proceed by scrubbing your toilet with a commercial toilet cleaner.
Faucets
Clean with vinegar and water. If you have stuck on soap scum or lime deposits, soak a few paper towels with vinegar and wrap them around the faucet for an hour, then scrub clean.
Windows and Mirrors
Make your own window cleaner from 1 cup vinegar, 1cup water and a tablespoon of cornstarch. Wash your windows and mirrors with this cleaner and then dry them off with a dry cloth. This will give you clean and streak free windows.
