Removing Oil and Grease Stains
Fighting a battle with an oil or grease stain? First, remove as much of the oil (or grease) as possible by blotting it with a paper towel or wash cloth. Next, find one of the below cleaners. Depending on your stain and where it is, one cleaner may work better than others. I have used many different cleaners on oil and grease stains and have created a list of the products and short reviews below.
After finding a cleaner, use hot water along with your cleaner when removing the stain. If you are cleaning your carpet or an area that can withstand boiling water, fill free to use it. Heat works well on the oily stains.
Oil and Grease Stain Removers
DeSolvit – This cleaner works great! It removes most oil and grease stains without leaving any oily residue behind.
Orange Clean – Orange also does a great job with oil and grease stains and you can use it almost anywhere.
Dish Detergent – Dawn seems to be highly recommended with removing many different stains including oil and grease. Dawn has worked fairly well for me on oil spills, but is a runner up compared to the first two cleaners.
When using a detergent, make sure it doesn’t contain dyes.
Lestoil – Is another great all purpose cleaner. The down side to this cleaner, is that it can be hard to find and has a bad odor. Also watch out for their bottles, they tend to leak easily.
Simple Green – Is an all purpose cleaner that fights oil stains fairly well.
Ammonia – This is another cleaner that works, but its smell is very strong. I personally don’t like using it.
WD40 – WD40 works in helping breakup the oil and grease, but needs another cleaner to help fully remove the stain. When using WD40, spray your stain and allow it to set for 10 minutes and then clean it up with another cleaner. I did see an improvement when using WD40, but the results weren’t significant.
