Repair Water Damaged Cabinets
Refinish Kitchen Cabinets
Help keep cabinets looking new. Moisture around the kitchen stove, sink and dishwasher can be extremely hard on your kitchen cabinets. An example is when the dishwasher is opened soon after a wash cycle; the hot steam comes rushing out. This hot steam over time can cause the cabinet finish in the surrounding area next to the washer to be damaged. Or water from the sink finds its way onto the wood cabinet doors below the sink. Over time the finish feels rough and starts to peel.

Before
There are numerous cleaning products like Cabinet Magic from American Products on the market that can help keep cabinets looking new if used on a regular basis. However for wood and laminate cabinet surfaces that have been damaged from over exposure to humidity, you may need more than just a cleaning product.
If you find that areas of your cabinets have become dry, dull and the finish shows signs of peeling, now is the time to take action. Lightly sand the cabinet area with 150 grit sand paper and a sanding block. Always sand the wood with the grain. You only need to sand enough to remove any rough surfaces, any loose material and leave the wood grain looking smooth and clean. It is not necessary to remove all of the old finish.
Now you need to re-stain the wood with a matching or close to matching stain. If the cabinets are painted, prime and paint with a quality enamel paint. For a stained finish to match, you may need to actually mix two different colors. It is good to experiment with different stains to find the best match and then label the cans of stain for possible future use and what quantity of each was used. Use a clean, lent free cloth to apply the stain. If you can not find a close match, you may need to expand the area to the full door or side of the cabinet for refinishing, not just the affect area. This will make it more difficult to tell that the stains did not match exactly.

After
Once the stain has dried based upon the manufactures recommendation, apply an indoor/outdoor polyurethane finish. The finish should be applied in 2 or 3 light coats with a brush suited for applying a finish of this type.
Job done, you dealt with it and the reward is many more years of having a great looking cabinet finish.
